A suddenly stalled table is the most common emergency call we receive. In the vast majority of cases, the cause is simple: the table drive shear pin (WB599) has done its job and sheared to protect the gearbox from overload damage.

What Is the Shear Pin?

The shear pin is a deliberate weak link in the table drive train. It connects the main drive gear to the table spindle. When cutting forces exceed the design limit — a tool dig-in, a workpiece shift, or a programming error on CNC-retrofitted machines — the pin shears cleanly. This protects the gearbox, clutch, and spindle from catastrophic damage. It is a consumable safety device, not a failure.

Symptoms of a Sheared Pin

  • Table stops rotating mid-cut — suddenly, not gradually
  • Clutch engages (you can hear and feel it) but the table does not move
  • No unusual noise, grinding, or smoke — the stop is clean
  • Machine otherwise powers up and operates normally

How to Check

The shear pin is accessible without major disassembly on most W&B models. Consult your service manual for the exact location on your series. On most machines:
  1. Disengage the clutch and lock out the machine
  2. Access the shear pin location (typically through an inspection cover on the base casting)
  3. Inspect the pin — a sheared pin will show a clean break at the shear groove
  4. Replace with a genuine OEM shear pin (WB599) — do not substitute with a harder pin or bolt, as this removes the overload protection and risks gearbox damage

If It's Not the Shear Pin

If the shear pin is intact, the problem is elsewhere in the drive train. Common next steps:
  • Clutch not engaging: Worn clutch plates or wrong spring type — see our Clutch Plate Lookup to confirm correct parts for your series
  • Clutch slipping: Glazed Ferodo discs, oil contamination, or wrong disc fitted during a previous rebuild
  • Electrical fault: On EM/EV machines, check the variable-speed drive and control relays
  • Hydraulic fault: On machines with hydraulic clutch engagement, check pump pressure and solenoid valves

Order Shear Pins

We stock genuine W&B shear pins (WB599) in the USA for immediate shipment. Shops running heavy work should keep 10–20 on hand.
